Patios & Outdoor Living in Conroe and the Greater Houston Area

Around Lake Conroe, life happens outside. Palacios Construction Group designs and builds complete outdoor living spaces for homeowners across Conroe, Willis, the Lake Conroe area, and greater Houston, from a simple covered patio to a full outdoor room with a kitchen, fireplace, and lighting. Because we are a true full-scale builder, we handle the slab, the structure, the appliances, and the electrical as one project, so you get one finished space and one accountable contractor. A well-built outdoor space adds real living square footage to a home and is where families spend their best evenings, which is why it deserves the same care as any room inside.

What makes an outdoor space last in our area is what happens under it and around it. Our region sits on expansive clay that swells and shrinks, and our patios are built on the same rebar-reinforced concrete and proper drainage that anchor our flagship concrete work. We grade the site, plan the drainage, and pour a slab that holds, so your patio does not crack, settle, or pool water a few seasons after it is built. A beautiful patio over a poorly drained slab is a problem waiting to happen, so we build from the ground up rather than the surface down.

Why Homeowners Choose Palacios

A Backyard You Actually Want to Spend Time In.

A well-built outdoor space adds real living square footage to a home and is where families spend their best evenings, which is why it deserves the same care as any room inside. We grade the site, plan the drainage, and pour a slab that holds.

We are a family company that has built in Texas since 1985, and owner Joel Palacios is on every project. One call reaches a real person, the estimate is free and in writing, and the work is documented. If you have been picturing a backyard you actually want to spend time in, this is where it starts.

Whole Outdoor Rooms

The patio, cover, kitchen, fireplace, and lighting were designed and built as a single coordinated project.

Drainage Done Right

French drains, grading, and slope are planned for our expansive clay so water works with your patio.

Covered Patios & Pergolas

Wood-frame covers with composite roofing and cedar or pressure-treated pergolas.

Outdoor Kitchens

Built-in grill islands, appliances, ventilation, and wired-in power and lighting.

Concrete Flagship Behind It

What Makes an Outdoor Space Last

Three Things That Decide Whether You'll Love Your Backyard

Outdoor living projects fail for predictable reasons, and almost none of them are about the furniture or the finishes. Get these three things right, and your patio is a space you use for decades. Get them wrong, and it cracks, floods, or bakes in the sun.

01

1. Drainage and the ground underneath

The number-one killer of patios and outdoor kitchens in our area is water and the clay it sits on. Houston-Black soil swells when wet and shrinks when dry, and without proper grading and drainage, slabs heave, settle, and pool water against the house. We design the drainage first, with French drains and the right slope, and pour on a properly prepared base, because everything else you build sits on top of it. Get the drainage wrong, and no amount of nice stone or expensive appliances will save the project, because the ground itself will work the structure apart.

02

2. One contractor for the whole space

A real outdoor room involves concrete, framing, roofing, an outdoor kitchen, plumbing, and electrical. Hire that out piece by piece, and you become the project manager, chasing trades who do not answer to each other. We build the entire space ourselves, so the slab, the cover, the appliances, and the wiring all come together cleanly under one accountable contractor.

03

3. Shade and structure built for our climate

Our summers are brutal, and our storm season is real. A covered patio or pergola has to be engineered to handle wind and tie into your home correctly, and the materials have to stand up to heat, sun, and humidity. We build covers and structures that are anchored, flashed, and finished to last, not just thrown up to look good on day one. Shade and solid structure are what turn a hot, unusable slab into a space your family reaches for on an ordinary evening, so we treat them as core to the design rather than an upgrade.

Our Process, Start to Finish

How a Palacios
Outdoor Project Works

From the first walkthrough to the finished space, our process keeps the design, the drainage, and the budget settled before we build.

01

Your call reaches a real person

You reach Joel or his wife directly. We learn how you want to use the space, the features you have in mind, and a working budget, then schedule a time to see the yard.

02

On-site design and drainage assessment

Joel walks the yard, looks at the grade, the drainage, and how the space connects to the home, and designs the project around how you will actually live in it. In larger outdoor rooms, we can model it so you see the layout before we build.

03

A clear written estimate

You receive a written estimate with no hidden fees, honored for up to three months, with the slab, structure, kitchen, and systems laid out clearly.

04

Site prep, grading, and drainage

We grade the site, install drainage, and prepare the base. This is the unglamorous stage that determines whether the finished space lasts, and it is the one budget crews rush through.

05

Concrete and structure

We pour the rebar-reinforced slab and build the covered patio, pergola, or deck, tying covers into your roofline with proper flashing and anchoring them for wind.

06

Outdoor kitchen, electrical, and finishes

We build the grill island or outdoor kitchen, install your appliances, wire in outlets, fans, and lighting, and complete the finishes that make the space feel like a room.

07

Final walkthrough and warranty

We clean up, walk the finished space with you, and make sure every detail is right. Our workmanship is backed by a warranty, and your quote was honored throughout.

Outdoor Living Pricing

How Outdoor Living Is Priced

Outdoor living is priced by scope because a simple patio and a full outdoor room are very different projects. Your exact price comes in a free written estimate after we see the yard.

Free on-site estimate

We do not charge for estimates. Joel comes out, looks at the space and the drainage, designs the project with you, and gives you a written quote at no cost and no obligation.

Typical project range

A concrete or stamped patio is a more focused project, while a covered patio with an outdoor kitchen, a pergola, a fire feature, and full electrical and lighting is a larger investment. We right-size the project to your goals and budget.

What moves the price

The biggest drivers are the size of the space, whether you add a cover or pergola, the outdoor kitchen and appliances, the decking material, and the electrical and drainage work. Premium decking, a full appliance package, and a built-in outdoor fireplace all add to the investment, and we lay each one out clearly so you can build the space that fits your budget.

A low-maintenance turf-and-patio backyard makeover

A homeowner was tired of mud, patchy grass, and constant upkeep and wanted a clean, modern, low-maintenance space. We excavated and prepped the yard and installed premium artificial turf for a pristine, year-round green that needs no mowing or watering, then applied a high-quality decorative concrete coating to the existing patio. The new patio surface and the turf blended together seamlessly, and we completed the whole makeover in about a week.

Local Conditions in Montgomery County

Why Outdoor Spaces Are Built Differently Around Lake Conroe

The clay, the rain, the heat, and the storms all shape how an outdoor space should be built here. These are the realities we design around on every project.

Expansive clay and drainage

Houston-Black clay is the defining challenge for outdoor concrete in our area. It swells and shrinks with the seasons, and patios poured without proper grading, drainage, and reinforcement crack and settle. We treat drainage as the first decision, not the last, installing French drains and the right slope so water moves away from your patio and your foundation rather than pooling against them. It is the same soil that drives our flagship concrete work, so the prep and reinforcement we bring to a driveway carry straight into every patio we pour.

Heavy rainfall and standing water

Our area sees well over 50 inches of rain a year, and gumbo clay holds it. An outdoor space that is not graded to shed water turns into a swamp after every storm. Proper grading, drains, and slab slope are what keep your patio usable instead of underwater, and they are exactly where careful work pays off.

Brutal summer heat and sun

Local summers deliver long stretches of 90- to 100-plus-degree days, which is why shade is not a luxury here; it is what makes an outdoor space usable. Covered patios, pergolas, and the right decking materials keep the space cooler and protect it from sun damage, and we design shade into projects from the start.

Hurricane season and wind

Our region has been through Beryl, Harvey, and more, and a patio cover or pergola that is not properly anchored becomes a liability in high wind. We engineer covers to handle the wind loads our area sees, tie them into the home correctly, and flash them so they shed water rather than leak.

A culture of outdoor entertaining

Lake Conroe living revolves around hosting, and the backyard is the venue. That is why so many of our clients want a full outdoor kitchen, a fire feature, and a layout that flows from the house toward the pool or the lake. We design these spaces around how our clients actually entertain. We think about traffic flow, seating, and how the cook stays part of the gathering, so the finished space works for real parties, not just photos.

Pools and pool decks

The lake area is full of pools, and pool decks take a beating from the sun, water, and chemicals. We pour new pool decks, resurface tired ones, and apply cool-deck coatings that stay comfortable underfoot, with drainage planned so water sheds away from the pool and the house.

Humidity, wood, and material choice

Our humidity is hard on outdoor wood. For decks and structures, we help you weigh pressure-treated pine and cedar against composite materials that resist rot and fading, matching your choice to your budget and the level of maintenance you want to take on. Choosing the right material upfront is what keeps an outdoor space looking good for years.

In Practice

Backyards We're Proud Of

Here is how our outdoor living work shows up for real homeowners in our area.

A covered patio, slab and all, in a week

One outdoor project we are proud of is a covered patio we built start to finish, pouring the slab and constructing the patio with its roof and all in about a week. It came out beautifully and shows what a single crew can do when the concrete, the structure, and the finishes are handled by the same team rather than scattered across separate trades.

A paver courtyard done right

A common project for us is a paver courtyard or patio laid on a properly prepared, compacted, and drained base so it stays flat and does not shift. Hardscape and paver work like this is the heart of outdoor living, turning an unused corner of the yard into a finished, inviting space. (Google review)

A low-maintenance turf-and-patio backyard makeover

One project we are proud of is a backyard transformation for a homeowner who was tired of mud, patchy grass, and constant upkeep and wanted a clean, modern, low-maintenance space they could actually enjoy. We excavated and prepped the yard and installed premium artificial turf for a pristine, year-round green that needs no mowing or watering, then applied a high-quality decorative concrete coating to the existing patio to elevate its look and durability. The new patio surface and the turf blended together seamlessly, and the finished space felt clean, spacious, and hassle-free, a true extension of the home the family could enjoy right away. We completed the whole makeover in about a week.

The Expertise Behind the Work

What Sets Our Outdoor Living Work Apart

A great outdoor room pulls together concrete, structure, appliances, and electrical. Here is the expertise behind ours.

Drainage and grading on clay

Drainage is the single most important and most overlooked part of an outdoor project here. We assess how water moves across your yard, install French drains and surface drainage where they are needed, and set the grade and slab slope so water always runs away from the patio and the house. Doing this right is the difference between an outdoor space that lasts and one that fails in a few rainy seasons. It is invisible once the project is finished, which is exactly why budget crews skip it and why we never do.

Covered patio construction

Our most common cover is a wood-framed structure with composite roofing, tied into your existing roofline. The skill is in the connection and the engineering, flashing the tie-in so it never leaks, anchoring the structure for wind, and matching it to the home so it looks original. A covered patio done right adds a true room you can use in any weather.

Pergolas and shade structures

We build pergolas in cedar and pressure-treated pine, chosen for the look, the longevity, and the budget you want. A well-built pergola defines an outdoor space, filters the harsh afternoon sun, and gives climbing plants or shade fabric something to work with, all while standing up to our heat and storms. Cedar weathers to a handsome silver and naturally resists rot, while pressure-treated pine delivers the same structure for less, and we help you weigh the two against your budget.

Complete outdoor kitchens

We build the full outdoor kitchen, not just the slab. That means the grill island, the counters, the sink and side burner, ventilation for covered spaces, and the outlets and lighting, with whatever appliance brands you choose installed and integrated. Most competitors pour a pad and leave the rest to others, while we deliver a finished, working kitchen. That single-contractor approach means the gas, water, and power all land where the appliances need them, with no gaps between trades for a problem to hide in.

Decks done in the right material

We build decks in composite lines like Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon as well as pressure-treated pine and cedar, and we help you choose. Composite costs more upfront but resists rot, fading, and splinters with almost no maintenance, while wood costs less and offers a natural look. We match the material to your budget and how you want to maintain it.

Pool decks built for the conditions

Pool decks have to handle constant water, sun, and foot traffic. We pour and resurface pool decks, apply cool-deck coatings that stay comfortable in the heat, and plan drainage so water sheds away cleanly. Done right, a pool deck is safe underfoot, easy to maintain, and built to take the abuse a poolside surface gets.

Outdoor electrical and lighting

An outdoor room is not finished until it works after dark. We wire in outlets, ceiling fans, and speakers, and install low-voltage landscape and patio lighting that extends the usable hours of the space and makes it safe and inviting at night. Handling the electrical in-house means it is integrated cleanly rather than tacked on later.
